Vintage Conn C-Melody 8M New Wonder Saxophone, Nice Restorable Condition! SAX
This listing is for a C-Tenor (some call this a C-Melody) made by the C. Conn Company of Elkhart, Indiana. It is the famous 8M model. The serial number is 88725 placing production in 1922. This instrument is in very good, restorable condition with no dents. All the keys move, none are rusted. It has an unlacquered finish and is in raw brass. The pads are original white kidskin and needs to be replaced. This instrument has the micro-tuner neck and rolled tone holes. Also included is the original mouthpiece with the ligature and cap. It is a low pitch model. This instrument is in great restorable condition. It will not play in its current condition. Conn made the finest instruments at that time and this 100 year old sax would be a great addition to your collection. Included is the original case and original Guarantee Bond. Conn Bb curved soprano saxophone with rolled tone holes. Most keys move freely and no keys are broken or missing. This soprano saxophone needs an overhaul(new pads, corks, springs and a cleaning for play-ability). The tarnished silver plating has scratches throughout, with approximately 85-90% of plating intact. There are no major body dents present and several minor dents can be removed during the overhaul. The serial number is in the low 70, xxx range, which dates the year of manufacture to approximately 1921 and has the letter “L” below the s/n(probably means this is low pitch). Included is a somewhat worn Conn wood shell soprano saxophone case(the latches work as intended, the handle is broken and needs to be replaced) and a used soprano sax mouthpiece/ligature. 1926 Conn New Wonder Series II “Gerry Mulligan Model” Bari Sax. Offered for sale is my prized 1926 Conn New Wonder Series II (two) Baritone Sax Serial #189, XXX. This is “THE SERIAL NUMBER RANGE” and Conn Model Gerry Mulligan played his earliest and most important Jazz Recordings. And later stolen from accounts I have read; B Second Conn Bari, Serial #189, XXX New Wonder Series II Artist Special Model with “00” Gold Plated finish and engraving. It was donated to the Smithsonian in Washington, D. By his Widow, Franca Mulligan; C Third Conn Bari was a 1929 New Wonder Series II, Serial #226, XXX in Silver Plate and Gold Washed Bell. FYI: The New Wonder Series II Conn Baritone Sax featured drawn and rolled tone holes, with split bell keys for the low B/Bb It is considered the all around “best” Baritone Sax ever made. Today, these NW Series II Bari’s are very scarce and quite valuable. The Mouthpiece is immaculate, with no teeth marks on the bill. And the table is pristine. I have never seen a Mouthpiece from a 1926 horn in such good condition. The lacquer appears to be from the 1930’s or 40’s, definitely nitrocellulose and is a pleasing honey brown. Surprisingly, the mother of pearl key touches are immaculate with minimal wear. The horn still has its original pearled rollers for the left key table and the low C/Eb Keys; these are usually long gone or broken. All the rollers move freely without any binding and the original pivot screws and pivot set screws are present, as are the Conn Factory needle springs from what I may observe. Other than these issues the horn’s body and bow are in great condition. It comes in a brand new Protec Bari Case, as the original case was shot. The horn needs a pad job and a set of new pads is included with the sale. My loss is your gain. Don’t miss out on the opportunity. Conn Bb Soprano New Wonder II Saxophone with rare silver plated body and gold plated keys (Factory Finish #1) on offer. The Horn has good pads and well adjusted key work. The bell is engraved with the name of a past owner (please see pics). The horn has some silver plating, and key wear as shown in the photos but the body is in very good shape with no apparent dings/dents or re-soldered keys/posts. Please feel free to ask any questions. From the 1928 Conn General Catalog (thanks to saxophone. Org/saxquest. Com). Finish 1-Quadruple silver plating over all, sand blast finish; with gold plated and hand burnished interior of Bell, ferrules, engraving, water keys, knobs, etc. Finger tips pearl inlaid, and on Saxophones, pearl rollers. On wood winds this finish symbol represents heavily gold plated keys, posts and rods. Which is interesting as the rods are gold plated but the posts are not on this horn. This is a great-playing example of a rare gold-plated vintage Conn New Wonder alto saxophone portrait model, of a woman wearing a hat, manufactured in the 1925, #138XXX, just before the transition to the Chu Berry New Wonder II. His sax is in normal used condition with wear and scratching expected from many years of playing with several resolders, but everything works great, and it is set up to good playing adjustment on pads around midlife or a bit older. The neck is worn to nearly bare brass. Photo #5 shows a solid old patch below the neckstrap ring, no effect on the excellent sound. This sax has a warm colorful sound, great focus and a nice vintage edge.
