1935-36 Conn Transitional Naked Lady Alto Sax with rare New York Neck
Serial # M266191A which puts it at 1935-36. Rare “New York” style neck: overslung (normal) octave mechanism, no microtuner. Neck is designed with a kind of recessed channel for the cork, so the inner end of the cork (opposite the mouthpiece) is flush with the metal of the rest of the neck. It’s kind of hard to explain and apparently very rare according some repair techs who’ve seen it and some discussion here, see picture for more detail where a slight piece of the cord is cut away to reveal the dropoff at the end. All original rich dark lacquer, very little wear except some significant wear on the keys. Recently repadded with MusicMedic chocolate roo pads, all pads are still in good shape and in pretty good alignment/adjustment, not perfect but pretty close; could use some tone hole / key cup leveling and key fitting to get into perfect shape but no major issues. No structural damage or issues. All key rollers freely moving. Alternate right-hand G# key. One significant flaw: the right hand swivel thumb rest was replaced at some point before I got it. The base was apparently either replaced or re-seated and attached with some kind of glue or something that ran down the back of the body a few inches to the edge of the low Eb tonehole (does not interfere with pad seal). This may be possible to clean but I’m not sure what kind of solution would be required. The swiveling hook section was pretty clearly not original and had some rough edges around the tightening screw, so I tightened the screw to where the hook stays at a straight angle, and covered the metal in mouldable plastic for comfort (removable/reshapable with a heat gun). Comes with an old Buescher case, somewhat beat up, structurally sound but one latch spring broken and top handle is busted. This is an amazing sounding horn, plays with an extremely focused and projecting sound, upper and lower register both speak very well, solid intonation throughout. EDIT: Since I’ve had questions from a few buyers, here are some quick videos I shot of the current pad seal condition, trying to demonstrate the amount of pressure required and highlight any small imperfections/leaks.
