This vintage FE Olds Mendez trumpet is from the private collection of esteemed jazz trumpeter Ryan Kisor. As a native to Sioux City, IA, it has been a privilege to serve Ryan and his family for many years. We consider it a great honor to offer several items of his personal collection for sale on our Reverb page. Overall, this instrument is in great condition. The serial number, 281296, dates it to 1958. Cosmetically, it the silver plating is in mint condition. The deluxe bell engraving is crisp and clear. The valves are quick and slides are smooth. Compression is great, age considered, and the horn plays nicely. The valve plating is in good condition, with minor staining, and all serial numbers match. The first valve trigger is loose and, although it doesn’t greatly affect functionality, should be resoldered / replaced. Aside from that, this is a great playing condition horn and has plenty of life left to give. If you want to see a picture of anything specific or have any questions at all, do not hesitate to ask. Unique 1964 Olds Mendez Professional Trumpet. The Mendez was the flagship trumpet for Olds in 1964. This is trumpet that has a focused sound with a brilliant lively warmth. The blow is nice, the valves are fast and quick and both the first and third triggers are smooth and functional. In the description it is listed as unique. All three valves are original with matching serial numbers to the trumpet. The 2nd and 3rd valve markings were incorrectly marked at the factory. In other words, the valve marked number 3 is actually the valve that should be in the number two casing. The valve marked number two goes in the third valve casing. I have owned many vintage Olds trumpets and I have never come across a factory mistake like this. Works great , just marked wrong from the factory. Included is the original case. For the most part, the case is in good condition. The right latch mechanism is missing the latch release button. It requires a paper clip and manual assistance to open. The overall cosmetic condition is above average for it age. There are no large dents, most of the lacquer is intact and it is certainly a vintage trumpet you can feel good about taking out of the case. Cosmetic blemishes include light surface scratches, pings, spots of missing lacquer and normal wear. If you know these horns , than you know what this is. 86,121 is the 8th oldest documented Mendez trumpet including the 79, xxx prototype. The oldest regular production number known is 86,004. Take a look at the pix. This is an older restoration as I have had this for years (10±). Done up in Gold Lacquer and the finger buttons are the original Gold plated. When I got it , although the horn was physically in great shape the Lacquer was in poor shape and just flaking off. To protect it and be able to play it on gigs I had it redone. One unusual thing was it had a Besson style finger hook that was added by the PO. My brass tech made me a copy of a Mendez finger hook brazing a ring to a base , just like the original Olds. Normally the front of the ring is cut out but I like it whole aka LA Ambassador. The valves have not been rebuilt but are in fabulous shape. Very fast and light and all the slides “pop” when you pull them out so I don’t think they leak. No case or mouthpiece. The horn is a real Beauty, super straight and a real player not perfect, just a few flea bites That don’ even show up in the pictures. Still, but no dents or wear. Great for a collection or to play on a gig, which I have many a time. Just didn’t put it on a Horn stand or used mutes. (Ok I babied it). If you have any questions, contact me and I’ll be glad to answer them. The item “Olds Mendez Trumpet One of the First Ever Made Los Angeles 1952 No RESERVE” is in sale since Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Also offered is an excellent condition large multi-horn Getzen case. The Emperor cornet bell was manufactured in the early 1960’s. The bore size measured on the 2nd valve slide measures. The Buescher bell diameter measures 4.75. The Emperor bell measures 4.81. The horn features a new 1st valve Getzen trigger that works flawlessly. The 3rd valve trigger is also new and is a Bach Strad/Olds Recording type trigger mechanism. All old lacquer was removed from the Buescher horn and the Emperor bell. What few small dings the horn and cornet bell had were gently removed. The instrument has been chem cleaned and thoroughly cleaned inside and out. The horn was then re-lacquered utilizing a baked on epoxy lacquer. The satin to glossy finish is not perfect but close. Some slight signs of last step buffing swirls somewhat noticeable here and there please see pictures. The horn was ultrasonically cleaned as well. All new valve stem corks and felts. The 1st and 3rd valve slide triggers move freely without drag. Excellent valve speed and compression. The oversized Getzen multi-horn case is in excellent condition. The case is able to hoId the double bell horn and another full sized trumpet with room to the posterior for accessories such as mutes etc. There is also an additional storage area under where the double bell horn rests. Oils, pencils, cleaning products can be stored there out of the way. The case has been sanitized with a hospital grade disinfectant, no musty odors to be concerned about. The case latches work fine and secure instruments nicely. If one wanted to carry a flugelhorn instead of the double bell horn the case allows accommodation of any brand of flugelhorn. It truly is an all purpose case. There is one key available for this case. It will be clean, shiny, sanitized, valves oiled, slides lubricated and ready to play right out of the box. I have been working on the concept of this particular double bell instrument for quite some time. I have tried multiple configurations before finalizing this completed instrument. I wanted a double bell multi-purpose horn that could be rendered useful with many genres of music. Time is the real issue with building a horn like the one offered here. I wanted all the bells and whistles so the instrument could hold its own in regards to flexibility in many genres of music. In configuring this horn I was able to demonstrate to myself and to the public attending some of the gigs in which I used this horn that it is truly and amazing instrument worthy of praise. I found it useful in dixieland style music as well as jazz work. When soloing the horn really can yield many different sounds. Typically I would use a combination of mutes or a mute in one bell and open on the other. The two different bells are accessed via the rotor valve easily manipulated with the left hand thumb. The rotor moves freely with little effort and stays in the selected up or down position until moved again with the thumb. I chose the rotor mechanism as opposed to a 4th piston(tried on another prototype double bell horn I still have in test mode) because the left hand must hold down the finger button when accessing the top bell on the other prototype instrument thus not being able to access the 3rd or 1st intonation triggers while playing. My reasoning for triggers vs traditional 1st valve slide thumb saddle and 3rd finger ring adjusters is due to situations where I would want to use a plunger mute for example. The 3rd slide may work its way out and inadvertently flatting some notes while manipulating the plunger mute. The 3rd slide trigger ensures the slide stays put unless the trigger is pulled. As far as the 1st trigger I tried a thumb saddle however the rotor was somewhat in the way when manipulating the thumb saddle, thus the Getzen trigger. In configuring this instrument the cornet bell was selected due to the need to assure the bell to tail measurement on both bells was exactly equal in relation to where the 2 bell tails exit the rotor valve. If the distance was different the intonation would have been compromised from bell to bell. With this configuration both bells yield the same pitch regardless of notes selected on the scale. In comparison when either bell is selected via the rotor and without mute(mutes) there is definite differences in sound characteristics from bell to bell. When the cornet bell is selected in the open format the overall sound is that of a traditional cornet as opposed to the bigger fatter sound of the Buescher bell. I hope in my description of the instrument and playing versatility that some of your questions have been answered. Feel free to ask questions. There have been several attempts over the years in configuring a double bell trumpet. There have been variations using rotor valves and/or a 4th piston with the 2 bells in different directions and planes. I have tried many configurations as prototypes. If you read my description you will see why I chose the setup shown in the pictures. If you “google”double bell trumpet then “youtube” videos of same you will be able to see and hear the typical variations in configurations/sounds of a double bell trumpet demonstrated by several artists. In my opinion the configuration I have chosen with all its amenities yields the best flexibility and offers better intonation qualities than any double bell horn produced to date. It also fits in a somewhat standard multi horn case. The item “Double Trumpet Bell Buescher 244 Getzen 1st & Mendez 3rd Triggers Plus XL Case” is in sale since Monday, July 17, 2017. OLDS MENDEZ 1967 VINTAGE TRUMPET One of Olds top of the line professional trumpets designed by Rafael Mendez, considered by the world to be the greatest trumpeter in his time (1930s-1980s). This trumpet was produced in Fullerton, CA, with serial #643567. Olds instruments have been considered to be one of the best musical instrument makers in the U. All trumpets manufactured today & in the past are copies of the French made Besson models Meha & Brevete. The French Besson trumpet was made in France prior to WWII & it had lightning-fast valve action & a very pure tonality in all ranges. Olds trumpets, in my opinion, came closer to these characteristics than most other trumpet manufacturers of the time, much like the qualities of the Stradivarius violins. This Olds Mendez trumpet has been completely restored to original manufacturers specifications by Borodi Music, Ohio. All custom etching was included along with the silver & gold plating, & complete valve assembly overhaul. This horn has never been played after restorations were completed. Included with this trumpet are the original Olds Mendez case, an Olds silver-plated mouthpiece (#7c), cleaning kit, leather valve casing protection cover, & a spare set of valves. BOXES or equivalent out of U. The item “OLDS MENDEZ PROFESSIONAL 1967 VINTAGE TRUMPET RECENTLY OVERHAULED” is in sale since Thursday, October 29, 2015. This item is in the category “Musical Instruments & Gear\Brass\Trumpets”. The seller is “oldstrmptsseller” and is located in Gold Bar, Washington. This item can be shipped to United States.
