Here is a vintage (serial number 196007) York Master “Schmidt” model double french horn. This instrument is in very good condition and plays very well. The valves move very well with very good compression, and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few small dings and pings as well as some isolated areas of very light pitting, etching, and scratching. The bell engraving reads: YORK MASTER/ 196007. All of the minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is finished in pure polished brass, and fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition. The York Master line was a line of higher-end instruments produced by Bohm Meinl in West Germany as subsidiary of the Carl Fischer company. Carl Fischer outsourced work for their high end brass, and higher quality instruments were produced for Carl Fischer in West Germany by Bohm Meinl. How the horn plays: Full, warm and rich sound with a smooth, buttery tone. Once properly intonated the F and Bb side intonation matches well, and the timbre matches well with the Bb having a tendency to be slightly brighter. All registers speak well and play fluidly. The horn is open and smooth with an excellent sound. Being a Schmidt model, some players will find it to be difficult to use the trigger. It may be necessary to hold the horn more upright and with a different hand position than for other types of double horn. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop.
