For those of you who may not be familiar, Frank is a true heavy hitter in the jazz world and has been featured on multiple Grammy winning albums. He is also the quintessential gear hound, having amassed a collection of over 500 mouthpieces! He now endorses and plays Jody Jazz mouthpieces exclusively so he is purging some of his massive collection of mouthpieces he has acquired over many years, as well as other random gear. Be sure to check out my other items for more great items from this collection. There will be more to come later, so add me to your favorites list and check back later to see new additions. The serial number is 274, xxx, indicating a c. It is stamped “L” for low pitch, the desired tuning for modern use. The 30M was Conn’s top of the line tenor sax. It is a step above even the 10M professional model. Some liken it to a 10M on steroids! In fact, it is built on the basic platform of the 10M design, but with lots of upgrades. It has solid silver key touches, and a redesigned octave key that is hinged on the bottom of the neck. The oversized pinky table keys have also been re-designed for lighter action. There are adjusting screws everywhere, which makes repairs easier and more accurate. It also has standard Conn features, such as locking pivot screws, and of course rolled tone holes. This horn is in very good playing condition. It had a playing condition job done relatively recently by a well known Chicago area tech. I just did a leak light inspection, and all pads are sealing properly with a light touch. Of course you may want to have it adjusted to your tastes by your own tech, but it is definitely fully playable right out of the box. This horn is in very good physical condition as well. The body is straight, and the neck has not been pulled down. There is one minor ding on the bell, and maybe a couple additional super tiny pings, but no significant dents or dings. No obvious signs of past trauma or re-soldering. The keys are all moving freely, and rollers are all turning. It doesn’t have excessive mechanical wear to the keywork. The pads are older (except for a few just replaced at the last servicing). I would say they are about mid-life. Now for the one negative… Unfortunately this horn has been relacquered, and it was buffed rather heavily in the process. The engraving isn’t completely buffed out, but it is faint. Luckily the tone holes seem to have been spared. My guess is that this was not the result of a single buffing incident, but rather the combined effects of multiple buffings over the decades. From the 1940’s through the 70’s it was all to common to buff and relacquer horns as part of a standard overhaul. From what I’ve heard, they wouldn’t even ask if you wanted it done, it was just a matter of course, and most players prefered a shiny’new’ looking horn. Obviously the tide has changed on that sentiment. I won’t get into the debate about whether or not this affects the sound of the instrument, because you probably already have your own opinion. This horn is a monster player! The tone is incredibly rich, and FAT! It has just a massive sound to it, very spread, and on the dark side. The intonation is quite good for a horn of this age. It speaks easily from low Bb all the way into the altissimo. Frank mentioned that he thought the neck from this one is particularly good and he’s played enough vintage Conn’s to know! It was owned by a longtime pro player who passed away in his 90’s some time ago. This player also had a 58′ Selmer Mark VI that I bought, but he apparently continued using this Conn as his main axe even after getting the VI. I’ve got a few of his business cards that were in the case, which I will throw in, just for kicks. Lastly, the case is in overall good condition. It is solid, but well worn. There are no structural issues, the handles are present, and the latches spring open as they should. I’m not sure if it is original to the horn or not, although it does look to be from the right era. Of course you’ll probably want something more modern for day to day use. There is no mouthpiece, nor any other accessories included, except for the original end plug. Thanks again for looking! This is due to lack of available transportation ie. If this potential wait presents a problem for you, please refrain from purchasing at this time. I sincerely apologize for this, unfortunately unavoidable, inconvenience. The item “CONN 30M CONNQUEROR TENOR SAXOPHONE VINTAGE 1936 VG PLAYING CONDITION” is in sale since Sunday, June 20, 2021. The 30M’s are a fairly rare/premium Conn pre-WWII Tenor, and include sterling silver key touches on all non-mother of pearl keys. The pads seal and have flat metal resonators with rivets. The horn needs minor adjustment to play well; existing pad seal is ok. The horn itself has been re-lacquered/buffed, though the original engraving is still evident. The horn has some minor dings, dimples and evidence of past dent work, especially on the outer part of the bow. The body and key work is in good shape overall without any obvious re-solder work. Lower stack trill key is absent from the horn. The neck is an original 30M neck and seals well to the body. Conn 26M Connqueror Alto Saxophone 267910
Conn 26M Connqueror Alto Saxophone made in 1935 (SN=267XXX) on offer. The 26M plays from high F to low Bb but will need adjustment to play extremely well and smooth. Pads are in decent shape overall. All 8 rollers are present and fully functional. Neck strap ring is almost worn through and will need to be reversed/replaced for secure use–especially with a metal end neck strap. It does sound like an typical (great) early 6M/26M with a large centered tone that will take pretty much all the air you can give it. The body has evidence of some minor dings/dents and past body/re-soldering work. Also, a non-original King style key guard is installed over the low Eb key (see last pic). The engraving has been buffed (still visible but definitely very diminished) and the horn has been re-lacquered with little lacquer. The neck has some dings but is overall in good shape and seals well to the body of the 26M with nice cork. Significant delays should be expected with any international sale during this COVID reality we all face. Thanks for looking at the listing! Please feel free to ask any questions. Conn 26M Connqueror Alto Saxophone made in 1935 (SN=267XXX) on offer. The 26M is in excellent playing shape, with a major professional servicing in December 2020 (please see pictured receipt for details). Pads are in very good shape overall with moderately domed riveted metal resonators that seal very well from high F to low Bb. Action overall is nice and light with a little bit higher tension in the low B/Bb “pinky” keys. Keywork is very tight and several set screws were replaced for the perma-adjust feet/key rods as part of the recent service. All rollers are present (one is black plastic/non-original) and fully functional. The body has evidence of some minor dings/dents and past body/re-soldering work. Also, a non-original King style key guard is installed over the low Eb key (see last pic). The engraving has been buffed (still visible but definitely very diminished) and the horn has been re-lacquered with little remaining lacquer. The rarest of the rare, the best of the best.. Conn 26M Connqueror aka… Artist model, Naked Lady, lady face, etc. The Conn 26M has always been regarded as one of the very best saxophones ever made. The Conn 6M (aka standard) saxophone is clearly known to be one of the favorite alto saxophones of all time. In fact, some players prefer the Conn 6M to any other saxophone to date.. Conn (Charles Gerard Conn & Company) took the deluxe and very rare 26M “Connqueror” series several steps further than the base 6M model… With much improved ergonomics (check out the placement of the left hand pinky table relative to the upper stack keys), larger/oversized pinky table, improved & faster mechanism, silver-inlaid key touches on every key that doesn’t have a pearl (and the right thumb hook), individual adjustments for each key to allow for set & forget long-term adjustment via the Conn perm-adjust system. Want a better Conn 6M VIII? This 26M is it! Original Conn key pearls and rollers. Amazing near-mint condition for its nearly 85 years of age, and the unmistakable Conn pinky table keys are in good alignment. It has some very very minor lacquer pitting and minor dings/scratches – common for this vintage. One key guard foot was resoldered on the back of the bow. Even though the finish may not be original (I only say this because it appears to have a slight orange-peel texture to me – perhaps I’m wrong however) it may be the factory finish or factory refinish – regardless the engraving is sharp & absolutely perfect, and this 26M saxophone is surprisingly complete and unmodified. It has the original Conn 26M micro-tuner double socket neck; no sign of any pull down; some very minor dings (see photos); the 6M/26M sax have a completely unique & sleek neck design with the very different under-slung octave lever. This neck is stamped: “STD’D M” meaning it is a limited-edition special neck (similar to the “VIII” neck). Rolled tone holes (RTH) – a unique feature and they are much easier on the key pads. The pads have Conn appropriate metal resonators. Metal resonated leather pads – I believe these are Conn reso-pads… The right stuff for this iconic sax. All keys operate, move freely, and quickly – just as they should on a Connqueror. With a play test – it is in need of an adjustment – however you can tell that this 26M Connqueror alto has some serious power and wants to unleash it! Even for a Conn 26M Connqueror this one has some rare features.. The STD’D M stamped neck. It has the very desirable pivoting right hand thumb rest! It is engraved with the word CONNQUEROR prominently on the bell! I believe all of these features were only available the first year or so of the 26M. Yet I’ve seen several that don’t have all three of these features – so… This is rarer and an extra desirable combination. This legendary professional saxophone is a rare find – particularly in this pristine condition. First come, first served… Don’t miss this super rare, near-mint Conn 26M CONNqueror Naked Lady. Vintage saxophones this special don’t come along every day, make an offer.. Includes the factory original Connqueror-only tweed case in fair-good condition. It will be packed well.
