Up for sale is a beautifully engraved Vintage Conn “New York Symphony” 22B from 1923. It is Silver plated with some gold highlights with 85% of the plating in good condition. Mother of pearl buttons and in the bottom valve caps. Conn trumpets did not have a’pinky hook’ until later in the 20s so it is not missing. (see old brochure in photos). The Conns of the this era also didn’t have the model stamped and the only way to tell the difference is by measuring the bore size. The 24B had a very narrow bell, but the rest are as follows. This instrument is a 22B Conn “New York Symphony”. Valves are fast but do have some surface corrosion however compression is reasonably good for a 99 year old instrument. I used Yamaha Vintage Valve Oil. It actually plays really well and could easily be used at a performance. A larger mouthpiece works best with this small bore instrument. There seems to be some repairs done to the tuning slide but other than that there is no significant dents. No red rot or stinky vintage smell either. The 2nd valve seems to have had a patch, but this is barely noticeable and looks very professional. I didn’t notice until after owning it and it does not effect playing. I wondered if it was just an original protection patch as the 2nd valve slide sticks straight out. Case works, though exterior is worn. Please note: There is no mouthpiece, original Bb/A slide or tuning rod with this trumpet. Price reflects this compared to other listings with full spares. Notice the its lack of a right hand pinky ring. That isn’t damage; it’s supposed to be that way. Not uncommon in the 20’s. Over the years the 22B evolved into the instruments listed seperately as the 22B New York Symphony “Late model” and eventually the 22B Victor. It gained a leadpipe pinky ring around 1928, and a main tuning slide brace around 1936. Instruments up to at least 1930 had top spring valves. Sometime around that date the valves became bottom sprung. The 22B New York Symphony “early model” is 19½” long, weighs 2¼ lbs and has a 4 5/8″ bell. It has a #1 bore (0.438) and was built between 1922 and approximately 1935. Don’t confuse the venerable 22B New York Symphony/Victor with the current 22B Director.
