Vintage C. G. Conn 2B Bb Trumpet (1929 Silver, Gold-Wash, Engraved French Brass)
Vintage Conn 2B Bb Trumpet with silver plat (matte and polished), mid-levl engraving on bell, and gold wash (though this has partly faded). Using Conn Loyalist, the serial numer dates to 1929, but before the quality decline of the Great Depression. Professional trumpet and top of the line at the time. Mother-of-pearl inlay on the top keys and bottom valve caps. Used a couple dozen times in a home environment, and a handful of times in concerts. One of the first trumpets to have a pinky rest. The stamped B denotes the bell is made of french brass, a different allo composition compared to yellow brass. There is wear where the left hand grip. All parts dissassemble and move correctly. The 3rd slide can still pop. The valves move smoothly without drag or too much play, though not as precise as newer valves. There is silver plate wear on the tuning slide. Bought in 2013 from Austin Custom Brass, where the original listing said the leadpipe was replaced by Rich Ita. Condition and dings: see pictures. The middle bottom valve cap has a lip that is partly loose. It threads on as normal, however, and when installed there is no visual difference. It’s not evident from the pictures, so I should mention it. It wasn’t mentioned to me in the original Austin Custom Brass listing, and I feel a need to state the condition. The pitch is pretty good, but I’m not a professional. I like to think I have pretty decent pitch, though, from harmonizing or doing scales. The D below the staff didn’t need me to pull out slides too much, and as we go above the staff it doesn’t seem to get sharper like some horns can do. I can still hit the low G below the staff, too, if that indicates the condition of the compression. I will post the Conn period mouthpiece if anyone is interested in that too. It’s a V-shape, with a deeper cut and slightly narrower cup width than a regular bach 7c. It plays with a resonant, slightly bright tone. The extent depends on the mouthpiece used.
