OLDS & SON HYBRID ML BORE. 460 PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET WITH A N. KANSTUL 1000 CHICAGO SERIES BELL BRUSHED/ SATIN LACQUERED FINISH IN SUPERB RESTORED CONDITION I have been playing horns for 64 years… Collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, producing custom finishes, and building custom horns for 53 years. Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection. During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so. All my horns are gig ready… They have been completely disassembled, cleaned, valves are hand lapped and precision adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary, all slide tubes are hand lapped and polished, and then the horn is re-assembled and play tested. PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED For your consideration, here is a custom built hybrid trumpet consisting of a 1958 Olds horn body, a 1949 Olds lead pipe, and a N. Kanstul Chicago Series bell that was found on the Kanstul model 1000. I developed this trumpet to be more of a lead trumpet, and it has the capability to fit perfectly into any performance situation and part assignment. It comes with a Blessing thermo plastic case, pro stage quality trumpet stand, and a Blessing 7C mouthpiece. This trumpet is a medium weight 2 lb. 6.2 oz. Horn that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue. Agile and efficient, and having an extensive range of tonal colors, this trumpet offers a consistent core of sound throughout all registers and dynamics, with a pitch center to match all its other outstanding performance characteristics. It easily matches and blends with other trumpets and trumpet players. The trumpet has a clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled… Its sound is very centered, focused, and FAT! It is a free and open blowing horn with a rich, warm tone, and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere where it develops a sophisticated brighter edge with complex overtones. This horn has superb intonation… The low register is not flat, and is very resonant. The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation. Responsive and flexible, this professional hybrid makes an awesome jazz horn, but shines playing pretty much any music style. I built this trumpet from vintage Olds parts and a N. Kanstul 1000 Chicago Series, one-piece, hand hammered bell. I chose a 1958 Ambassador horn body as it had seen VERY little play time, thus the lightning fast valves are still bright and shiny, have near factory spec compression, and sport new beryllium copper springs and felts. Next, I added a 1949 Ambassador lead pipe and tuning slide as they had the most open taper of all the lead pipes in the Olds lineup. Nothing could be further from the truth. Please read the following passage from the Olds Central website. Many people believe that the Ambassador remains the best student trumpet (or cornet) ever built, rivaling many modern pro trumpets. It is a very open and responsive horn with great intonation, excellent tone, and fantastic valves. At least one designer of custom trumpets begins every horn with an Ambassador valve section. He claims to have disassembled virtually every brand of horn on the market, and finds the Ambassador valves to be the most reliable, trouble free, smooth playing valve section ever made. According to Zig Kanstul, the models of trumpets made by Olds in the 1940’s, 1950’s, and 1960’s, all were made with the same bell mandrel, to the same specifications – from the Ambassador all the way to the Mendez (although some models used different materials). The only major difference between the vintage Olds models were the bells… Some were all brass, brass with a solid nickel silver bell flare, Rey-O-loy (bronze), and a solid nickel silver stem with a rose brass flare. The only exceptions were the Opera (which had a larger bore) and the Custom Crafted model [which had a newly designed “Ultrasonic” spun bell with a narrower taper]. According to another famous Olds designer, Olds was a “one tolerance shop” – in other words, all models of horns were made to the same tolerance. In particular, it is said that this was true from the Ambassador trumpet all the way through to the Mendez. The Ambassador and Mendez were designed at roughly the same time, and were intended to be essentially the same horn (even using the same brass with the same thickness of metal), made to the same tolerances. Except for the fact that the Ambassador was heavily over braced for student usage (and abuse), it was no different than any other Olds model. Lead pipe tapers varied very little among the different Olds models, but the early issue Ambassadors had the most open pipes. All models had different main braces, but all were of the socket and rod variety. I chose to use Conn style socket and rod braces which attach the bell to the lead pipe without any tension whatsoever. Using “Z” style braces that are non adjustable, manufacturers will squeeze the bell and lead pipe together to close a gap, thus placing both tubes under tension… This results in dampened resonance. The lead pipe was clocked prior to reassembly. I reversed the 1st valve slide and added a fixed thumb ring. Both the tuning slide and 3rd valve slide have Lee’s water keys installed. There is a stop rod on the 3rd slide. All slides operate with silky smoothness. The horn was given a brushed finish (except for the bell interior, valve caps, and key buttons which are highly polished), and then covered with gold tinted satin lacquer to provide a maintenance free finish. I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any “surprises”. Finish – New gold tinted satin lacquer over brushed yellow brass and nickel silver. Serial # – 272XXX Bore Size. 460″ medium large bore Features – One-piece, hand hammered Kanstul 1000 Chicago Series 4 3/4″ diameter bell; reversed 1st valve slide w/ fixed thumb ring; 3rd valve slide w/ adjustable ring and stop rod; Lee’s water keys. A Blessing 7C mouthpiece is included. I do my very best to be as accurate as humanly possible in my descriptions. Just a musician and collector.
