A Compensated Brass Nut to Help You Achieve Perfect Intonation. Hello again from AxeMasters. Guitar intonation is an often overlooked procedure which, when done properly, helps you get each string properly tuned. This means that your guitar sounds great regardless of whether you’re fretting or playing open chords. How many times have you been playing, sounding great, when you bounce into an open C chord and suddenly the tuning sounds terrible? A properly compensated nut will fix this. In our experience, the three treble strings are typically the most bothersome with respect to intonation. So, we’ve specially slotted our compensated nut at the G, B and high E slots. By removing material to the proper depth in those three slots, the scale length for those strings is increased just enough. Now, even if saddle travel is nearing the end, you’ll still get the intonation “just right”. I installed the compensated brass nut today I bought from you. Not only did it perfectly solve my intonation problem, but it also made the guitar string action lower and as smooth as butter! My intonation problem “was bad”. I installed one of the Golden Age Roller bridges because it had more intonation adjustment travel than most others. That bridge didn’t solve the problem, so I checked out the truss rod and it was okay. I knew at that point the problem had to be in the nut. I had tried 5 different nuts before I bought your compensated nut. None of the other nuts worked, but yours worked absolutely perfect. And now my intonation, string action, and tone are PERFECT! Thank you so much! Our flat-bottom nut is hand ground and sanded from solid musical brass and round-slotted for perfect string placement. All hand-made – no machines. Something so simple, it’s amazing this compensated nut idea isn’t a standard item. The C, D, and G open chords have always been slightly out of tune for me, and for the last few decades I just learned to work around it. Your nut works perfectly for intonating those chords!
