Up for sale is a genuine piece of American brass history – a 1921 Frank Holton & Co. Holton-Clarke Model cornet, serial number 62256, manufactured in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. This is the celebrated collaboration between Frank Holton and legendary cornet virtuoso Herbert L. Clarke, one of the most influential brass players in American music history. This is the “Long Model” configuration – the elongated, trumpet-profile version of the Clarke cornet that sets it apart from the more traditional rounded cornet shape. It plays in both Bb and C, with the dual-pitch switching mechanism fully intact and functional. The bell carries the full factory engraving: HOLTON-CLARKE MODEL / MADE BY / Frank Holton / ELKHORN WIS. In a shield cartouche with fleur-de-lis crown – sharp, deep, and fully legible after 100+ years. Honest vintage condition appropriate to its age. The original silver plate survives throughout with a deep, natural patina – cleaned but not polished, preserving the authentic aged appearance. Silver plate loss is present in the usual contact areas. Valves move with nice action. All slides freed successfully. No major dents, no crushed tubing, no structural damage. Includes the original Frank Holton hard case with the brass Elkhorn emblem on the lid. Case exterior shows significant wear consistent with age but remains structurally sound.
