If you have been waiting for the right minty Selmer Alto saxophone to come along for your collection, here it is! This is possibly the best preserved SBA Alto there is. It was a backup for a pro musician that got very little play. He was 97 years old when I bought 4 instruments from him, including this beauty. 1953 Selmer SBA Super Balanced Action (Super Action) Alto serial number 51xxx. Incredible condition and rare to see the high F# key. Has a low C key crescent installed for tuning (you can just make it out in pics). Very easily changed back. 1953 is the final year of SBA production before the transition to Mark VI in 1954. These offer a mix of the more open spread Balanced Action with the later focused Mark VI tone. Vintage case included, and the original wood neck plug is also present. (National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians). I have evaluated this saxophone as being in excellent play condition. Snappy action and well intonated. The neck is also perfectly fit, just as I like them. The pads feature the large, seamless dome resonators which I believe were original to this. They look good and seal well. Amazingly, I cannot find a single dent on this horn. Not even a ping. Little bits of corrosion near the Eb tonehole, as is typical. Original lacquer is virtually all there outside of the normal touch points and a wear spot on the left side of the bell. Bare brass spot on bell, not sure if that is a leg rub spot, or a case rub spot. Can be seen in pics. The Super Balanced Action (SBA) is the rarest of vintage French Selmers, with only some 18,000 being made including Tenors and Bari’s. Vastly more Mark 6’s were produced. Some say the Super Balanced is the finest saxophone Selmer has ever produced, surpassing even the legendary Mark VI. Selmer actually called these “Super Action” but the term Super Balanced Action has been used to differentiate them. Someone will own it this week and have a nice Christmas present! I will super pack and double box. The neck does have the serial number and it is matching. Also, one of the ribs on the body has the serial number, too. So it appears 3 times. Check out the 40k SBA Tenor and Otto Link Improved Tonemaster MPC in my other auctions.
