Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. Here is a very old German built rotary valved flugelhorn with a mouthpiece. The bell of the horn is 5 1/2. There is no maker’s mark, so it is difficult to say exactly where in Germany the horn was made and by whom. This horn is in very good condition and plays quite well. The valves move well (although there is a little bit of clicking from the mechanical linkage), and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the horn, the brass is quite wavy and also a bit scratched and satin over much of the instrument. The horn does have several reinforcing patches due to its age, and the second finger paddle has been replaced. It looks as though a previous owner of this horn used some form of flugelhorn stand, and on the inside of the bell flare there are many tiny dings. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now–if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina.
