Alexander 103 French Horn from 1912 Rare Collector's Item and Great Player
You rarely see these early Alexander 103s for sale! The Alexander 103 was first put into production in 1907. This Alexander 103 was dated to 1912 from an Alexander employee, at the very least Pre-WWI. It had a recent valve job so it plays great! Great highs, strong lows, intonation consistent. Smaller bore than the modern 103s. The horn is built at A=438 (common late Romantic pitch) and takes a narrow shank mouthpiece, but with the right mouthpiece it can play at A=440 fine with the main and Bb tuning slides pushed in. If necessary there is room to shorten either the main or Bb tuning slide to bring it more easily up to modern pitch. The bell and bell tail have numerous patches, but the metal is otherwise strong. Up for sale is a rare, beautiful and killer horn in GREAT condition. Made at the original HN White factory in Cleveland, these 1055T Flair’s are difficult to find. And I have owned this one (serial 415, xxx) and a later Eastlake horn and THIS one is the better of the two, by far. Posessing a sound that is full and deep in the lower registers and with a searing, clear edge in the upper octaves. Valve action is quiet, short stroke and fast. Simply a sensational player! Silver finish is as close to 100% as I dare say. Valves are awesome and have great compression. There is a tiny sign of dent/scuffing on lower bell tail area, but it probably doesn’t show in the pics it’s so inconsequential. Any questions, please ask! This tenor sax has the potential to be a hidden gem with some TLC. Most of the keys move freely and the snap in pads are in poor to fair condition(should be professionally cleaned, new pads/corks installed to be playable and adjusted for optimal performance). This tenor saxophone has the raised Buescher 400 logo, elaborate Top Hat and Cane bell engraving, a bell tone ring and an under-slung octave key on the neck. There are no major dents present and the minor body/neck dents pictured can be removed during the pro repad/overhaul. This tenor saxophone has scratches throughout and minor lacquer wear from normal use, with approximately 90% of lacquer intact(may not be not original). Included is a somewhat used, worn and musty smelling Buescher wood shell tenor saxophone case(all latches function as intended, case interior is intact, exterior has scuffs and wear, both handles are usable). Conn Bb curved soprano saxophone with rolled tone holes. Most keys move freely and no keys are broken or missing. This soprano saxophone needs an overhaul(new pads, corks, springs and a cleaning for play-ability). The tarnished silver plating has scratches throughout, with approximately 85-90% of plating intact. There are no major body dents present and several minor dents can be removed during the overhaul. The serial number is in the low 70, xxx range, which dates the year of manufacture to approximately 1921 and has the letter “L” below the s/n(probably means this is low pitch). Included is a somewhat worn Conn wood shell soprano saxophone case(the latches work as intended, the handle is broken and needs to be replaced) and a used soprano sax mouthpiece/ligature.
