CONN 10M Vintage Tenor Sax Pre war metal #2659xx Dexter Gordon Naked Lady
Vintage 10M Tenor Saxophone Serial #2659xx – A real Dexter Gordon horn with a meaty G to G midrange. Top end is more controlled sounding, like a Mark VI. My other 10s are throatier sounding. This one has a more refined sound on the top and bottom, which makes it easier to blend with a big band sax section. Conns can be a little unruly on the top end but not this one. I think it’s a real nice compromise. A meaty mid range sound that gets attention with a clear concise top end. That really sounds better than the vast majority of 10Ms. There is one re-sodder on the bell to body brace. Sodder is visible on the bell. Les realigned a larger comfier. And the sling hook has been lowered two inches. Les does that to most Conn tenors. So any alterations were done by Les Arbuckle. I believed he owned this for awhile. There are no dents or damage / noticeable repairs that I could spot. Pictures will tell the story! Regular maintenance has been performed by sax tech and virtuoso Manny Varela of Miami. He plays with Paquito D’ Rivera’s band and with his Keyboard playing son’s band in NYC. I asked Manny to replace all the metal resonators on most all the pads except for the G, F, E and low D pads. It seems to have given the horn this hybrid sound I was looking for. See what you think. On Conns, I love using metal resonators. I have used hard rubber pads in the upper register for over 10 years. Les Arbuckle in California loves trying out new ideas. He’s got plenty of cool suggestions. It plays like and I beleive is original lacquer. I will get some more opinions. I pack well and mark ” FRAGILE GLASS ” on the box. Comes with a Ritter soft sax case. The pads in the upper register are leather but I have used hard rubber on my soprano for over ten years. I encourage you to experiment. As you well know. Mouthpiece and necks can make a night and day difference in your sound. Adjusting pad heights slightly can also make a world of difference. Lubricating old Conn horns regularly can make a world of difference. They were designed to lubricate regularly. These are different animals compared the quality controlled manufactured horns of today. It’s shocking how consistent the way a lot of new horns sound. That said , the personality in these old 10M’s is immediate to feel and recognize. They are not as consistent but each one appears to have it’s own personality and and strengths. The quality of the metal used in pre WWII Conns is so resonant. Conn employed real artisans to assemble horns in their rolled tone hole ” glory years “. They were always experimenting and that is why these old horns have a personality and mystique of their own. The joy for me over the years has been appreciating and realizing the artistry involved. For instance, Selmer and Conn fans flip out when they. Find out about ” SML ” horns which were designed to employ the best features of each brand. I love them but ended up being more comfy with my old Conns and Selmers. Thank heavens , the science in making reeds for us finally seems to have arrived at a ” zenith “. Reed technology has exploded. People would always ask me what are you going play next? My standard reply was whatever horn has the best reed! It always got laughs but was true. Those days are over. The feature photo or 1st photo of this horn is of a transitional horn and not a 10M. All the other pictures are correct! I have called quite a few times to have it removed. No luck as yet. My apologies for the error. Working too many hours without sleep. Please disregard the 1st picture of this horn. It is not the 10M. Very sorry and embarrassed about this but I’m a 24/7 caregiver to my wife these last two weeks. She has 2 broken legs. I have been trying to get image removed with no luck the iast few days. Last notice to buyers! Please disregard the 1st or featured picture of this horn. It is of another older Conn and not the one for sale. I assume because of health concerns. The service and help centers are not opening up to allow me to remove the picture. It is a special 10M that plays more like a Selmer in the top end which seems to allow for a faster technique. Yes I will sweeten the deal because of my mistake. The item “CONN 10M Vintage Tenor Sax Pre war metal #2659xx Dexter Gordon Naked Lady” is in sale since Wednesday, October 14, 2020. 1928 Conn New Wonder Chu Tenor Sax/Saxophone, Mostly Bare Brass, Plays Great
This is a great-playing example of a desirable vintage Conn New Wonder II Chu Berry tenor saxophone manufactured in 1928, #M209XXX. His sax is in well-worn used condition with plenty of wear and scratching from many years of playing, the vintage laquer is worn to nearly bare brass, but everything works great, and it is set up to good playing adjustment on pads around midlife or older, with necessary recent replacements. Some pulldown in the neck as seen in photo #5 which also shows a light soldered patch, no effect on the great sound of this sax. Very free-blowing with a warm vintage edge. SELMER MARK VI TENOR SAXOPHONE #154760. Lacquer is 90% original. 1968 Beauty
SELMER MARK VI TENOR SAXOPHONE #154760. Lacquer is 90% original. Mark VI tenor saxophone #154760 was manufactured in 1968, right in the middle of the production run. This one-owner horn was played on, but never toured with or gigged with an awful lot. As a result, most of its lacquer (about 90%) is intact, and there are very few blemishes on the horn. A few scratches front of bell to bow ring, caused by a sax stand; strap ring; body contact side of main tube (surprisingly not along the body side of the bell, what we refer to as “chair scratches”). Looks like a dent was professionally removed from the bow, leaving a scar in the lacquer. Bit of wear on the key touches, and some discoloration on the keys themselves, probably some splatter from a “wet” player. Neck looks like it was pulled down slightly at some point, leaving the crease marks along the side, though it appears to have been straightened. We’ve tried to show these areas in the photos. Most but not all of the pads have been replaced and look quite fresh. There are a few that look like they are original. All pads have brown plastic domed resonators. This horn has been gone over in the shop, to seat all pads and regulate and lubricate the mechanism. Of course you may want to have your own horn tech go over it and set it up to your specs. Ships in a ProTec form fitted hard case, in very good condition. Serious offers only , please. Remember, your offer is a binding contract. We are happy to answer them if we can. The upgraded replacement for the T901 series, this TWO1 brass model is suited just as well to aspiring beginners as to experienced professionals. It has a strong tonal core thanks to a re-engineered bore and toneholes, plus many upgraded features exclusive to the WO series such as newly designed Front F Keys, Ride Side Keys and Right Pinky Key. Key: Bb Range: Low Bb to High F# Body: Brass Bow: Brass Bell: Brass Keys: Brass Finish: Lacquered Neck: Brass Neck Type: Detachable Neck Case: Fabric Covered, Woodshell case with outer pocket and Backstraps Single Arm Yanagisawa’s single arms used on the bell keys are extremely strong and have proved reliable for many years. Higher-End models can benefit from double arm bell keys. Balanced Tri-Point Brace The bell and body are firmly linked by a three-point, balanced brace which ensures structural resiliance and firm resonance, even when fortissimo is sought. Metal Adjustable The buffers used on the bell keys are metal – and therefore offer increased longevity and accuracy over plastic – and are fully adjustable. This means the aperture of the bell toneholes are within your control. WO Series Bore and Tone Holes In Yanagisawa’s desire to constantly innovate, all new WO series saxophones have a newly engineered bore and toneholes. This helps achieve a smoother blow and even more precise intonation. WO Series Brass Material The WO series saxophones benefit from a newly designed, newly engineered and specially sourced brass material for improved sound and sonority. C# – Bb Rocking Key The C# and Bb keys have a rocking table / see-saw mechanism that allows for optimal speed and fluidity between these pitches. WO1 / WO2 Style Hand Engraved Yanagisawa WO1 and WO2 series saxophones now feature a uniquely styled, hand engraved pattern. F-Auxiliary Key This mechanism fitted to the F-Aux key ensures a proper seal of the pads when playing in the low ranges of the saxophone. WO Series Redesigned front F Key The Front F key on WO series saxophones has been redesigned to further improve the ease of fingering. White Shell Lining A player’s fingers will rest comfortably in the indented white shell keys. The white shell also enhances the beauty of the instrument while also preventing the player’s fingers from slipping during technical passages. Body Mounted The standard design for most regular saxes, the keys are mounted directly to the saxophone body. Ebonite Mouthpieces Ebonite mouthpieces are favoured for their warm tone and ability to fit into an ensemble seamlessly. However, as players discover their own voice, switching to another style of mouthpiece can open up a whole world of new tonal possibilities. Metal mouthpieces are often favoured by Jazz players or soloists who need to stand out from the crowd. WO Series Neck Plate For Overslung necks, this new plate exclusive to the WO1 and WO2 models gives a tighter, more controlled tone. Overslung An overslung octave mechanism is the standard system employed by most regular saxophones. It is the simplest mechanism for manufacture, and is to be found on 901, 902, W01 and W02 models. This system is also used on solid silver tenor models. Fluororesin Non-Stick Mechanism As standard octave key mechanisms can get sticky over time, Yanagisawa’s flouroresin, non-stick coating ensures a reliable action with no stickiness. Metal Reflectors Metal reflectors are an improvement upon the standard plastic reflectors, and they add clarity to the tone and improve playing response across the whole dynamic range. Air Tight Waterproof Pad Yanagisawa’s superb waterproof pad is totally air tight which allows complete confidence in the instrument’s tonal integrity, plus the waterproof material offers a greatly extended pad life. WO Series Palm Key Plate Previously only available on the 99 series saxophones, the WO Series’ addition of the palm key plate delivers high range resonance, acoustic depth, added projection and added tonal stability. Pointed Pivot Screws Special pointed pivot screws are used in all centre arms on Yanagisawa saxophones. These screws precisely maintain the stability of the centre arms, and help achieve a very high precision action. WO Series Right Pinky Key The angle of the Right’Pinky’ key on WO series saxophones has been improved to give a smoother fingering feel. WO Series Right Side Key The Right side key levers on WO series saxophones now has additional feet for a better touch. This affects the Bb, C and E. Blue Steel Springs Blue Steel Spring are better than stainless steel – as used on most other saxes – as they hold tension more effectively, and therefore enhance the key action.
