Up for sale is a genuine piece of American brass history – a 1921 Frank Holton & Co. Holton-Clarke Model cornet, serial number 62256, manufactured in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. This is the celebrated collaboration between Frank Holton and legendary cornet virtuoso Herbert L. Clarke, one of the most influential brass players in American music history. This is the “Long Model” configuration – the elongated, trumpet-profile version of the Clarke cornet that sets it apart from the more traditional rounded cornet shape. It plays in both Bb and C, with the dual-pitch switching mechanism fully intact and functional. The bell carries the full factory engraving: HOLTON-CLARKE MODEL / MADE BY / Frank Holton / ELKHORN WIS. In a shield cartouche with fleur-de-lis crown – sharp, deep, and fully legible after 100+ years. Honest vintage condition appropriate to its age. The original silver plate survives throughout with a deep, natural patina – cleaned but not polished, preserving the authentic aged appearance. Silver plate loss is present in the usual contact areas. Valves move with nice action. All slides freed successfully. No major dents, no crushed tubing, no structural damage. Frank Biltmore Trumpet; Barrington Ill. Refurbished – Case & Mouthpiece Bore. 456 – Serial# 111. Franks are some of my favorite horns, this Barrington Illinois built Biltmore model is in good shape and plays wonderfully. Valves are smooth with excellent compression, slides are smooth and firm, caps thread easily. Case is solid, left latch has been moved and tape covers the original latch location, case latches fine, hinges are good and the case is in good shape, the horn comes with a vintage Blessing 13 mouthpiece which fits the receiver properly. UpYourBrass shop policies are to offer only inspected, repaired, thoroughly cleaned, detailed horns. Horn is dis-assembled and inspected, soaked in an organic de-greasing solution and scrubbed. Body, valves and components are treated in an organic chem clean with Tesch products (Tesch is recommended by NAPBIRT). Hand-lapped valves and chambers (This process can take up to an hour). Complete detail of all components, hot water scrubbed and prepped for assembly. Valves aligned, pads and springs replaced as needed. Play tested and final inspected before listing for sale. Clean your instrument regularly (especially lead-pipe and tuning slide) and have a chem-clean or ultrasonic clean done every two years. Vintage cases are all disinfected, cleaned and sanitized but there may be a residual horn smell in any old case. UpYourBrass Policies (please read). All valves and slides move freely and the valve compression is good, with no worn through plating on pistons. The bore is approximately. 475 and a standard shank trombone mouthpiece is accepted into the receiver. There are several minor bell, body and slide dents present. This bass trumpet has scratches throughout from normal use and the minor lacquer wear is minimal, with approximately 85% of lacquer intact. The serial number is in the 319, xxx range, which dates the year of manufacture to approximately 1959. No mouthpiece or case is included. Up for sale here is an excellent 105 year old Frank Holton Chicago New Proportions silver plated cornet, with shepherds crook. The serial number is 25, xxx made in 1914 at 169 Gladys Avenue in Chicago. The 0- bore code on the second valve casing indicates a. This horn plays amazingly and has a silky, smooth tone. Its not as brassy as a lot of horns I’ve played over the years. I played A Whole New World for my wife earlier on this bad boy, and lets just say old Aladdin wishes he could swoon a lady just so. I had all of the “major” dents removed (there weren’t any that were TOO bad, but a few in the bell and the crook). I didn’t bother with the minor ones because there arent that many and they arent super noticeable. Its more a flat spot in the curve of the pipe rather than a jagged dent. I only noticed it as my finger touched it as i was putting the horn in the case. The plating wear is very minimal, limited mostly to just the first valve casing where the thumb grips the cornet and the third valve casing. Again, even this isnt extensive. Unfortunately, the valves show some wear and most of the original plating is worn away. BUT, the valves still glide smoothly and are very, very responsive. They water keys need to be re-corked, but theyre still plenty functional. It appears that the springs have been replaced sometime in the last several years as they still have a lot of springiness left. The horn comes with a mouthpiece (unmarked), a second set of slides (im guessing they tune the horn to “A”), as well as what I assume is not the original case. The original case would have had fittings for the additional A slides and this case does not. It is, however, totally in line with the old Holton cases and im almost positive it is in fact a Holton case. The case is in good shape but is 100ish years old, keep that in mind. All of the latches funtion properly as well as the hinges. The handle looks like it broke a long, long time ago and was repaured with lots of tape. It functions just like a good handle though. Take a good look at the pictures and don’t hesitate to ask any questions! Im more than happy to help. Also, check out my other listings.
