1935-36 Conn Transitional Naked Lady Alto Sax with rare New York Neck
Serial # M266191A which puts it at 1935-36. Rare “New York” style neck: overslung (normal) octave mechanism, no microtuner. Neck is designed with a kind of recessed channel for the cork, so the inner end of the cork (opposite the mouthpiece) is flush with the metal of the rest of the neck. It’s kind of hard to explain and apparently very rare according some repair techs who’ve seen it and some discussion here, see picture for more detail where a slight piece of the cord is cut away to reveal the dropoff at the end. All original rich dark lacquer, very little wear except some significant wear on the keys. Recently repadded with MusicMedic chocolate roo pads, all pads are still in good shape and in pretty good alignment/adjustment, not perfect but pretty close; could use some tone hole / key cup leveling and key fitting to get into perfect shape but no major issues. No structural damage or issues. All key rollers freely moving. Alternate right-hand G# key. One significant flaw: the right hand swivel thumb rest was replaced at some point before I got it. The base was apparently either replaced or re-seated and attached with some kind of glue or something that ran down the back of the body a few inches to the edge of the low Eb tonehole (does not interfere with pad seal). This may be possible to clean but I’m not sure what kind of solution would be required. The swiveling hook section was pretty clearly not original and had some rough edges around the tightening screw, so I tightened the screw to where the hook stays at a straight angle, and covered the metal in mouldable plastic for comfort (removable/reshapable with a heat gun). Comes with an old Buescher case, somewhat beat up, structurally sound but one latch spring broken and top handle is busted. This is an amazing sounding horn, plays with an extremely focused and projecting sound, upper and lower register both speak very well, solid intonation throughout. EDIT: Since I’ve had questions from a few buyers, here are some quick videos I shot of the current pad seal condition, trying to demonstrate the amount of pressure required and highlight any small imperfections/leaks. Here is an unbranded bari sax. The patent and serial markings are. PAT SEPT 14, 1915. The patent info is consistent with the markings on Pan American horns which is probably the most common Conn stencil brand. It does look like the Conn 12Ms of that period although it does not have rolled tone holes like the Conns. I know that represents a lot of conjecture. I’m just providing the info based on some research I’ve done and the years of repairing/restoring experience I have. You be the final judge. All I’ve done to this horn is replace 3 pads and work the neck slightly to make it playable. I would have a little more work done to make it play to it’s full potential as follows. It has the telltale slight “outy” ridge on each side. I tried to show it in one of the pictures. Replace a few more pads. They are a mix of old and newer. Most are newer style with domed plastic resonators. Fix the neck receiver. There are signs of stretched/warped brass near the screw, and the neck is sloppy even with the screw tightened. The horn plays like there is some leakage there (even though I could still hit low Bb). I expanded the very bottom edge of the neck tenon ever so slightly to make a better seal which helped quite a bit, but if I seal the whole joint with electrical tape, it really barks out down to the low Bb. The low C# key guard needs resoldered in two places. There are a few corks missing and/or worn. Most dents are shallow except arguably the push-in at the thumb hook and the top foot of the low Eb key guard. You might consider having those pushed out although I doubt you’ll notice they impact playability. I don’t see any flat-spotting at the bottom of the bow which is pretty remarkable for an old bari. There are a couple of larger dents near the high F key. Still not too bad, but maybe you get those fixed depending on your preference? The case is a Conn. It is beat and taped up, but is still pretty solid and fits the horn nicely. The case will be wrapped with cardboard but with the handle exposed/accessible so the shippers can more easily handle the package and reduce the risk of it being dropped.
