Vintage Bach Stradivarius 37 Trumpet Early Elkhart Strad PLAYER! Serial Number #75xxx Made In the early 1970s before Vincent Bach passed away! Arguably the most iconic trumpet to exist!! Preferred by more musicians in the world than any other trumpet ever! Vincent Bach was an expert trumpet maker, and was a virtuoso trumpet player himself. From humble beginnings, Bach has started making mouthpieces from the basement of a music store in New York City in the early 1920s. The success of his mouthpieces led him to developing a full trumpet. This eventually led him toward building one of the most respected brass instrument manufacturing facilities in the world, in the Bronx of New York City. Bach eventually relocated to Mt. Vernon, NY where some of the finest models of brass instruments of all time were designed and refined. The instrument you are looking at here was one such model. Where at one point in history most of, and some of the finest brass instruments were produced in the world. Sadly, those statistics no longer hold true today. In the early years of production Vincent Bach remained very involved with production, ensuring the company would properly honor his legacy. Some suggest the horns made at this time may even surpass the quality of earlier Mt. Today, musicians are very careful when selecting an old Bach trumpet. Many processes have changed over the years since Vincent Bach died in 1976, and the general concept of production and value has changed within the company. While the company has invested in resurrecting the spirit of the old days, the magic of the old Mt. Vernon and early Elkhart Bach Trumpets is unquestionable! This instrument is THE model most desired. Its a Medium Large Bore, Bach Stradivarius Model 37. It has a one-piece yellow brass hand hammered bell. The instrument as you can see is in nice condition! The silver playing is mostly intact, and the horn has professionally cleaned and serviced. The slides move freely, and the valves hold superb compression. The horn shows typical wear signs, and show signs of having pings and dents removed over its nearly 50 years of life. The instrument is all original, and shows no signs of red rot or other concerning features. All in all, this is in really nice condition! Whats most impressive of all is how incredibly well the instrument plays!! This horn is absolutely an INCREDIBLE playing instrument, and underscores why these horns are so desirable! It slots so effortlessly. The intonation is superb, and it just sings smoothly thru all registers! The original case is included, although the matches do not work. The matches can be replaced. This instrument is a player, sweet and silky but able to lead the band without breaking. There have been small dents removed from the bell, tuning slide and outer hand slide tubes. The inner hand slide tubes are in excellent condition with no signs of wear on the tubes or stockings. The dual bore hand slide action is smooth and drops freely from its own weight. The instrument has not been abused but shows lacquer wear from playing and minor dents. The instrument comes with a slightly used Bach 6 1/2 A mouthpiece and a new Kases lightweight case. Please find an excellent condition vintage medium bore lacquered professional New York, N. (Bronx) era Bach Stradivarius model Bb trumpet, excellent condition vintage New York, N. (Bronx) Bach Stradivarius case, new Bach Stradivarius zippered case cover, good condition silver-plated Bach Mt. Vernon 7C mouthpiece, vintage clamp-on lyre assembly, cleaning accessories and lacquer polish. A terrific bundle sale for that particular collector/player. The horn was produced in New York City(Bronx), New York serial number 9709 yielding manufacture date to approximately 1951. The bore size measured on the 2nd valve slide measures. The bell diameter measures 4.75. The original owner must have special ordered this horn with a 3rd valve slide waterkey as most Bach Strads typically do not have a 3rd slide waterkey. It sure is more convenient to dump water when needed rather than pulling out the dump slide. What few small dings the horn had were gently removed. The instrument has been chem cleaned and thoroughly cleaned inside and out. Overall the lacquer is original at about 95% fabulous. I did a few touch-ups after a few areas of original lacquer pitting were buffed and clear coat sprayed. I felt that protecting the raw areas after buffing would keep the lacquer from any further pitting and lacquer loss. There is no way that I have found to match the gorgeous vintage lacquer on horns of this era, thus the clear coat spray over raw areas shows the bright brass under the lacquer. If you see a few bright areas such as the top portion of the leadpipe, bell end at about 2 o’clock looking from mouthpiece receiver to bell, these areas have been buffed and clear coat spot sprayed. My typical approach to finding a vintage lacquered horn is to strip the old lacquer and re-spray the instrument with a baked-on clear epoxy lacquer. However I have found that most pro players/collectors would rather find an untouched pristine horn that has not been messed with too much as far as the finish. Many particular folks don’t want anyone possibly changing the inherent quality of sound a high quality instrument like this New York Strad. Better known as the” don’t mess up a good thing” theory. If the horn does not sell within the next several months I will stop the listing and give my best effort to strip and re-lacquer the horn at some point. I just wanted to give anyone interested in this horn in all its original glory to have a shot at ownership. The horn was ultrasonically cleaned as well. All new valve stem corks and felts. The 3rd valve slide finger ring adjustment moves freely without drag. Excellent valve speed and compression. The vintage Bach Stradivarius New York, N. (Bronx) case is in excellent condition. Only the handles have evidence of average wear. The latches spring open and secure the instrument nicely. It has been sanitized with a hospital grade disinfectant. There are no keys available at this time. When I first came across this horn and case I could not believe the instrument and case were 66 years old. Personally I have never owned, played or come across a New York era medium bore horn/case that was in this condition. The lacquer appears to be original. There are no re-solder or repair work evidence on the horn. All tubing, slides, leadpipe are straight, dent free, and red rot free. All etchings are pristineserial #, bell, “M” etc. , valve top and bottom caps are free of knurl wear with all lines pristine. However the zippers were in need of repair so I trashed the old cover. I felt the instrument deserved a new Bach Strad case cover, therefore it is offered with the case. I took pictures of all sides of the case if anyone would like more pictures. All we get is 12 pictures on this website unfortunately to display our items. The case truly is in excellent condition even the bottom of the case looks as good as the top and sides. The inside of the case shows little wear as well. Because the handles were the only part of the case exposed over its 66 year history they do show average wear consistent with the age. The Mt Vernon 7C mouthpiece is in excellent condition. At some point this was to be another one of my “holy grail instruments”. I played it for some time in a big band lead position with excellent results. The horn got great reviews from my fellow bandmates. Just think this horn could be your holy grail axe? What a gorgeous horn with great playability, intonation, warmth, and volume. The horn is clean, shiny, sanitized, valves oiled, slides lubricated and ready to play right out of the box. All the professional trumpet player blog websites give this era of Bach Strad the highest ratings possible. Please do your research on this fabulous instrument. At this time I also have a Mt. Vernon medium large bore Strad for sale with a strikingly similar description. Please note the two listings are completely different but nonetheless similar in many ways.
