Vito Model 35 Leblanc System Alto Saxophone
Vito Model 35 Leblanc System Alto Saxophone. Based on what you probably know about Vitos, you may be thinking that this is a student level sax. This is not one of those. This sax was manufactured in France by Beaugnier, and likely assembled in Kenosha, WI (based on the “A” in the serial number). Finish is a nice mellow amber and pretty darn complete. There are some minor scratches, as you can see in the pics, and very little in the way of minor dents. One footpad on the bell key guard looks to have solder flux-caused discoloration. The Model 35 features the Leblanc System fingering – one of the few major innovations in saxes since Adolphe’s original design. It’s a real shame this design didn’t live on as it is renown for solid intonation and reliable altissimo fingerings that go all the way up to F4. Want an altissimo “easy button”? This fingering system is the way to go. Want a few more ways to play middle C or Bb or F# while still staying compatible with basic sax fingering? But can a Vito be a pro horn? It was played by Vincent (Jimmy) Abato, RIP, and Ted Nash (look’em up), who may still be playing one. THAT should settle THAT. The tone is full and can get loud, which was a very pleasant surprise when I first played one. Putting a high baffle mouthpiece on it does NOT result in a loud whiny tone. Loud yes, whiny no. I’d call the tone of the mid and upper+ register (remember there’s also an upper-upper register) exceptional. The lower register is also comparatively good, but, you know, Conn and Martin.. I still use one as my main alto, but I’m no one you can lookup. I also don’t need two of them any more. Can it play classical? Can it R&B or Rock? The volume will help you keep up with the trumpets and lead guitars, and the tone is flexible enough to snear and growl your way into a solo or blend with the French horns. I tell you, what a package! I’m using Martins for tenor and bari, but I strongly prefer a model 35 Vito for alto over the Martins, Bueschers and Conns that I’ve tried. The one I’m keeping has a bit more patina to it and I’ve gone back and forth between them as to which plays best for me. I currently only like that one a smidgen more. I think that a small change in palm F key venting on this one (lower the key a mm) may even them out for how I play. You may prefer it as-is. We both know that this Vito will not reach the prices that those other manufactures get. Browse around for other opinions and you’ll see others say that it’s well undervalued by the marketplace, which means you will get a good players’ deal. The case is in OK shape, but do yourself a favor and get a Hiscox or Protec if you plan on leaving the house with it. Pics of the case and anything else you might want to see on the sax are available upon request. Come over and give it a play test.
